My heart was deeply rent in the wilderness
when they ran to me in thirst and hunger
like wandering sheep without a shepherd. (1)
Yes, I am the good shepherd for them.

The false shepherds left the sheep
in a desert land of stale, unnourishing food,
in the wolf’s cruel desire for the flock. (2)
Yes, I am the good shepherd with a broken heart.

I am the good shepherd in this rough wilderness
among the cruel, wild animals of the darkness,
in the temptations of the false shepherds,
in the drought of truth, holiness, peace and justice.

I am the good shepherd.
I know my sheep, their thirst.
My sheep know me, their way. (3)
Come to me; I will provide rest for you. (4)

You will be in green pastures beside quiet waters.
Your soul will be restored in paths of righteousness.
You will see the light in the valley of the shadow of death. (5)
I am the good shepherd.
